Buy Laptop Computer Online

The first step in this process should be to decide how you will use your new laptop or notebook. Will it be strictly for business, a mix of business and personal use, only personal or are you an avid gamer?

Business Use - If you will use your new laptop or notebook for business, some of the features you’re most interested in are:
  • Size – If you travel, then thin is an important feature since you will carry your laptop in your work bag or luggage.
  • Weight – Another important consideration if you’ll be truly mobile.
  • Network Connection – Most new laptops and notebooks have network connections but some older, clearance or used ones may not have these.
  • USB Ports – These are usually better for your mouse. If you plan to use any portable drives, like pen drives and flash drives. These let you transfer files, photos, Word documents, Power Point presentations, etc. from one USB enabled computer to another.
  • Network – An absolute must for your new notebook. You should look for a built-in network jack. If it’s not built-in, then you’ll have to buy a network card so look for a built-in jack. If you’ll be traveling, you’ll also want a phone modem. Again, look for a built-in phone modem so you don’t have to buy a phone modem card (PCMCIA). If you have access to a wireless network, look for integrated wireless LAN capability. If it’s not integrated, you’ll need to buy a wireless LAN card. The 802.11b standard is the lower performance so the preferred standard now is the 802.11g.
  • Hard Drive – Usually not an issue when buying a new laptop or notebook but the bigger the better, try to find one with 15 to 20 GB or more.
  • RAM, Memory – Here again, the more the better. Go for 256 MB or more. The more memory you have, the faster your programs will run. If you usually have many programs open at the same time, get 512 MB or 1024 MB.
If you're ready to buy a laptop computer online here are some merchants with good business use latptops and notebooks:

Business / Personal Use – For people who would use their laptop for business and / or personal use.
  • Size – Size may not be as important as features if you will use your notebook for personal use. Instead of a small lightweight laptop, you may opt for a larger screen and a unit with more multimedia features. If you want to view photos or watch movies on your new laptop, then you’ll likely want a larger screen.
  • Weight – This isn’t as important as features. The weight usually matters if you’re lugging your notebook all over the planet.
  • Network – This may or may not be important to the personal user. At the very least, get an integrated modem so you can connect to the Internet. If you’re planning a home network, then you need to decide if you’ll have a wired or wireless network. If so, look for integrated network features, as opposed to buying a PCMCIA card for your network. If you plan on a wireless network, the faster standard is the 802.11g. The 802.11b is an older and slower standard.
  • Hard Drive – Consider your usage here. If you want to save many photos or want to watch downloaded movies, then look for a large drive over 30 GB. Get as large a hard drive as you can because it’s usually not easy to upgrade and will likely cost you money for someone to do this for you.
  • RAM – Think again about your intended usage. The more multimedia applications you wish to use, the more RAM or Memory you will want. Try to get at least 512 MB, again, the more the better.
  • Digital Cameras – If you want to download the photos from your digital camera, look for features like integrated USB and/or firewire. Some notebooks have built-in cameras for photos and sharing your face over the Internet. You can also get laptops with memory stick slots to easily transfer those photos from your digital camera.
  • CD Drives – If you like movies, make sure you get a DVD compatible drive with DVD player software. A DVD drive without the DVD player software doesn’t do you much good. CDR and CDRW drives are worth the cost. They’ll come in handy when you want to burn those photo memories to CD and share them. A CDR drive will let you burn to a CD only once per CD, hence the CDR (Compact Disc Recordable). A CDRW drive will let you burn to CDR and CDRW (Compact Disc ReWriteable) discs. If you get a CD burner, don’t forget to stock up on blank CDs. If you want to burn rewriteable discs, make sure the CD is labeled CDRW or CD-RW.
  • Multimedia – If you plan to watch movies, videos or play games then you also want to check out the video card. Most video cards today are capable of true color so look for the amount of RAM on the video card and go for 64MB minimum. Like system RAM, the more the better so get as much as you can afford. Want to use headphones or microphones? Look for the appropriate jacks.

Gaming Use – Your sole or main purpose is to use your notebook for video games. Here, you’re looking for a high performance laptop.
  • Size – Who cares? If you’re an avid gamer, who cares about the size of your laptop? It’s performance that counts!
  • Weight – Again, who cares? Performance tends to weigh more.
  • Network – An integrated RJ45 network jack is an absolute must. You’ll probably want integrated wireless capability as well. While you’re at it, also look for an integrated modem.
  • Hard Drive – Make sure you have plenty of hard drive space for all your games, look for a minimum of 40 GB.
  • RAM – Don’t go cheap here, get a minimum of 512 MB and get 1 GB or more if you can. RAM helps your games run faster and the action more fluid. RAM is one of the top features you want to get in your new notebook.
  • Processor / CPU – Go for the high end over 2.0 GHz, at a minimum. Don’t aim low here, great games need power.
  • CD / DVD Drive – At a minimum get a CD / DVD capable drive with CD burn ability. CD read speed should be 32X or more, you don’t want to wait an hour to install each game.
  • Video Card – It’s best to get a laptop with a popular name brand video card so look for nVidia GeForce, ATI Radeon video cards. ATI and nVidia are popular with video game publishers so their games usually run well with these cards. Patches & updates for major games are usually quick to hit the manufacturers’ websites. Don’t settle for less than 64 MB and try to get a 128 MB video card.
  • Multimedia – Many games are better with headphones so much sure it has the appropriate jacks. Usually, a sound card isn’t that important in a laptop but for gamers, a good quality sound card is a must. You can’t go wrong with Sound Blaster, nearly everyone uses them and for good reason. They’re high quality, reliable, well supported by video game publishers and very popular for a reason.
For great, high performance notebooks check out Alienware. They specialize in high-end computers. They also have an affordable line of computers but their high performance line is awesome and is a “must see”. Alienware makes their own systems and use the best components available.
